A Manifesto that puts Jerry Maguire to shame

A Manifesto that puts Jerry Maguire to shame

Jerry Maguire wrote a Manifesto that changed his life. Have you ever thought of writing one? Have you ever dared to write something so powerful that it could literally change the entire direction of your life, your business, your future? Kent did. The results were incredible.

In this very short episode, 8 minutes to be exact, Kent unveils everything about how, where, when, and why this Manifesto came about. It wasn’t that he had just watched Jerry Maguire again, for the 14th time. It was something that was deep inside of him waiting to come out.  The Portland Business Journal did a very big story on it and it has been making the rounds all over the internet. This isn’t something that someone from a major corporation might do, but if you run a small business or work for a small business, first you should listen to the entire 8 minutes and second you should read the manifesto. You will not be screaming the famous Jerry Maguire line, “Show me the money!” anytime soon, but you might just start down the path you have always wanted to be on.

The best and the worst of Mother’s Day gifts 2013

The best and the worst of Mother’s Day gifts 2013

Do you want to know what NOT to get your spouse for Mother’s Day? Todd and Kent share some Mother’s Day Top 10 lists that are going to leave you feeling better about what you haven’t got her yet. Do you remember anything you gave your mother when you were a young child? Todd remembers a poem and he remembers a piece of pottery, but he gave that to his dad. He still uses it nearly 40 years later.

We reached out to our community to find out what Mom’s really want and also to Dads, to find out what they are getting. The answers didn’t surprise us, we know them all, but they might shock you.

What are you going to bestow upon your loved one this Mother’s Day? Does she deserve it? Not all do. Either way, make sure you listen to the top 10 lists because without those, you might make the same mistakes these idiots did. I am not referring to Todd and Kent here, but some think I should.

Tips on how to help your child deal with post traumatic stress

Post Traumatic Stress can be a very difficult injury to detect and it takes careful and observant parents and friends to see if this has harmed your child.

In this episode, Todd and Kent don’t delve into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but what they do is talk about ways and give tips on how to help your child through what can be a very difficult time. They both have young kids of their own and the talk everywhere has been about the bombings, the bombing suspects and for a child under the age of 10, death can be a tough and challenging topic.

Maybe as a father you are not spending a ton of quality time with your kids currently because of your workload. Maybe your child is scared now that one day you are not going to come home, because something like this could happen where you live. Vaccines, Autism and a bunch of other stuff you’ve never thought about

Vaccines, Autism and a bunch of other stuff you’ve never thought about

So a report by the CDC recently came out and stated that Autism is in no way related to Vaccinations. However, if you look closely at the study, the factor they used actually has nothing to do with providing any information for one side or the other? Todd goes solo in this episode, but references a response by Dr. Bob Sears who is in favor of vaccinations, just not 41 by the age of 2.

Todd looks at all of the vaccines and the schedule which the CDC believes all parents should stick too. They are even suggesting you give you child shots that they don’t need. Which ones? Find out.

If you are an expecting parent or a parent of young ones under the age of two, this is an episode for you, only because it will make you think and so many believe that husbands don’t do that very often. If you have a child who has already been given vaccines, and your child doesn’t have autism, then this is still an episode for you because it will give you an understanding of what the CDC and others are asking you to do to your child all in the name of “health”.

Did you ever have Chicken Pox? Why are we needing a vaccination for it now in the US?  Before the Chicken Pox vaccine was licensed in the U.S. in 1995, there were approximately 100 deaths a year from chickenpox. That equals 0.000038% of the population and for that, all children are now required to get Chicken Pox Vaccines. Why don’t we just say it like it is. That percentage equals an opportunity for a business to makes lot of money. The business is question: Merck.

And so you know, only recovery from natural chickenpox disease will provide lifelong immunity. The Vaccine won’t provide that, in fact, when the chickenpox vaccine was licensed for public use in 1995, the FDA estimated that it was 70 to 90 percent effective in preventing disease. A December 2002 CDC study reported that “the effectiveness of the vaccine was 44 percent against disease of any severity and 86 percent against moderate or severe disease.” Some are suggesting a second dose of chickenpox vaccine may be needed. Another study in 2002 confirmed that adults exposed to natural chickenpox disease were protected from developing shingles and that there is concern that mass vaccination against chickenpox may cause a future epidemic of shingles, which is on the rise.

Since 2005, the Chicken Pox vaccine has also been available as part of a combination vaccine called MMRV.

Secrets the Junk Food industry never wanted you to know

Secrets the Junk Food industry never wanted you to know

As you walk down that aisle at your local grocery store, I want you to have one thing on your mind: The CEO’s of these Junk Food companies are spending millions of dollars trying to make you fat. They don’t care about your health. They care about delivering junk food that tastes good no matter what it does to your body and overall health. This weekend, the New York Times unveils an explosive investigative report written by Pulitzer Prize winning author Michael Moss about how junk food makers are comparable to the cigarette industry giants who only cared about getting you hooked and not your health.

It all sounds like a bad dream, which is what Kent and Todd talk about for the first few minutes of the show. What does a Dad do if their little girl or son have their first bad dream? That nightmare can have lasting effects and so can the way you handle it. With the help of a great post on the Huffington Post Learn tips on how to make nightmares actually help your child’s imagination and create an even tighter bond between the two of you.

Some Dads have no idea how to parent

Some Dads have no idea how to parent

Kim DiMarchi and Ann DeWitt, the co-hosts of Passport to Parenting join Kent and Todd in studio to talk about The Death of Mr. Mom, and the birth of another father who shows us that learning how to parent needs to come with instructions and a troubleshooting chapter, because what he did is senseless.

What has happened to Father’s in this country? One shoots up his daughter’s computer with a handgun. This one degrading his daughter with a shirt she was made to wear at school. I thought learning how to parent was difficult but I never thought I would do anything this dumb.

People often mention that we have to get a license to drive, to get married, but to have children? Nobody really knows how to parent. They only use what they have learned from their own upbringing. So maybe before parents give birth, there should be a serious class that is required in order that they learn how to parent.

Sundance: Family Films

Sundance: Family Films

Kent Lewis, Co-host of Dads Unplugged, Founder of Anvil and Formic Media, can now add Movie critic to his resume since his return from Sundance. This episode talks of five films that all chose to weave a family theme into them. Not all of them were family friendly, their carefully designed plots all were heavily influenced by the existence of family. Whether it was Concussion, Toys House, Don Jon’s AddictionjOBS or the Inevitable defeat of Mister and Pete, they all used the family as a major platform on which to build exciting films.

Kent described all of them and talked of an experience he will not soon forget.

Things your kids won’t ever learn in school

Things your kids won’t ever learn in school

Bill Gates did not write this list, but Kent and Todd did go through it one by one and analyzed with their incredibly intelligent brains. Remember, they actually drank beer on one episode they recorded at 10am.  You will learn that Kent actually remembers one thing he learned at school from his Social Studies teacher and it’s something we all should have learned…and they also discovered that the list shouldn’t be just 14 things long. Every school should make it longer… because when they do, all of a sudden the kids become grow up to more efficient employees. And there is a swear word in this episode.

The Holiday Ale Festival from Portland, Oregon

The Holiday Ale Festival from Portland, Oregon

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it’s time for the real Holiday season to hit. That means one thing around the northwest! Beer! Yeah, really good beers, and it starts with the Portland Holiday Ale Festival. Now, I know maybe you are listening to this episode from somewhere else in the country and you can’t get to the Portland Holiday Ale Festival, but use the show as a reminder to attend your Holiday Ale Festival in your town. If you don’t have one, then use this episode as the incentive to start your own.

Speaking of starting your own, that what’s our two experts did. One started at age 12 and the other started his own brewery in 1997.   Jerry Fechter of Lompoc Brewery co-owner of the company over 15 years ago and it’s been his passion ever since. Ron Gansberg from Cascade Brewing, who started brewing Root Beer at age 12, is well known in these parts and appears to be a stand up comedian in his spare time, in which he has none.

Jerry brought in two holidays ales for Kent and Todd to try, C-Sons Greetings IPA and 8 Malty Nights Porter. Nothing like some fine refreshments at 10:30am when we recorded this. They shared their stories and Ron shared many of his wonderful tales about the business. If you are a beer lover, an aspiring beer maker or just someone who loves a tall tale and a tall pint, this is the episode for you and your friends and a nice 6-pack!

Adoption: the Portland Trail Blazer broadcasters amazing story

Adoption: the Portland Trail Blazer broadcasters amazing story

If you are a trail Blazer fan, then you know what it is like to hear Brian Wheeler call a game. You are always on the edge of your seat. You can feel the highs and the lows, because Brian delivers the emotion in the ups and downs of his own broadcast. It is a always a  journey that leaves you drained and that’s just how all of us sports fans love it.

To hear Brian Wheeler tell his own story of adoption is just as emotional and draining. The man who Portland has fallen in love with has more twists and turns that Antonio Harvey’s double digit career. Adopted at birth, he grew up just like any of us. But that’s about where the comparisons end and his story gets better. The Voice of the Trail Blazers got a second chance. It’s a story only he can tell. This will top any Trail Blazer vs. Laker finishes or even the ending of a nail biter at the Rose Garden. I suggest you turn up the volume and listen. Because at the end of this one you will just be sitting there, shaking your head, saying, “I don’t believe it.”
