Most men around the world dream of one thing and it’s not dating a supermodel. It’s owning, wearing and showing off a great mustache.
Some of us can do it. Some can’t come close and yet still try (e.g., co-host Kent Lewis). No matter where you rank, you will always be welcome at the American Mustache Institute.
Yesterday, we had Dr. Aaron Perlut, the CEO and Founder of this prestigious organization on the air for a fun filled 30 minutes. We discussed Tom Selleck and Goose Gossage and their influence on American society. We also talked about The Mustached American of the Year award. On that note, there is only one week left to cast your vote, so do it now.
As for the interview, it is packed full of manly wisdom, mustache history, pop culture and excellent grooming tips. On a more serious note, we also talked about Movember and something we men should all be thinking about: prostate cancer.
If you want to change your life for the better, I recommend listening to it at least four times and sharing it with a least 10 people. And while you are doing that, listen to AMI’s Mustache Anthem on their website. It goes something like this: “I’ve got a mustache, and it kicks ass…” Awesome!

The question has been asked since puberty. Can I grow a mustache? Every man has asked it, even the Dali Lama, but not every man can answer it with a “yes.”
When we were kids we called it “peach fuzz.” Then we were told to shave that thing off, because it looked like a baby squirrel tail after a downpour. Do you miss it? Do you ever dream of what it could have turned into had you not Mach’d it off?
You can become a member of that elite club again. The American Mustache Institute is looking for members and their CEO, Dr. Aaron Perlut, Ph.D joins us on Wednesday at 11 p.m. PST.
Also find out what Dr. Perlut does with the rest of his time, when he is not grooming.

Sometimes Dads think they have it rough. Maybe it’s having to watch the kids when your wife is out of town. No matter what your situation, we doubt you have had it as hard as Kevin Carroll.
This father has overcome abandonment to become one of the most sought after speakers in the country. In fact, if you drink Starbucks coffee, you probably have read his quotes. It’s on over 17 million Grande cups. Plus you may have read his books to your kids, Rules of the Red Rubber Ball.
He has also worked with ESPN, the NHL, the NBA, Walt Disney companies, Mattel, Hasbro, the Discovery Channel, Nike and many others.
This Wednesday at 11 PST, Kevin will talk with Todd and Kent about overcoming hurdles and being the best dad you can be.

Every group wants an acronym. It kind of proves you have made it. However, this acronym is not helping any men, anywhere. SAHD stands for Stay at Home Dads, but why should someone be SAHD if they are staying home with the kids? Kent and Todd try to come up with a new acronym, but with the help of Jeff Pugh from Man of the House.com they decide on using an old staple and it fits just perfectly.

Well, he certainly may be the smartest man I have ever interviewed. His bio reads like the Holy Grail of all educators: the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Government at Harvard University, where he has taught since 1962. He has held Guggenheim and NEH Fellowships and has been a Fellow at the National Humanities Center; he also received the National Humanities Medal in 2004 and delivered the Jefferson Lecture in 2007.
His name came up while I was reading the “Man Up” cover story from Newsweek a few weeks back. I saw a line in the story that said “he advocated action and aggression.” I had to call him up and ask him what he meant by that because it wasn’t even a quote and it was the only reference to him in the story. He elaborated and more. We talked Aristotle, Feminism, Manliness, and what he believes separates men and women.
Laura, my wife, is our Chief Visionary Officer and I am our Executive Producer and I believe that we get more done sharing the duties and our children get more from us that way, even as frustrated as I do get sometimes. So you can see that I do not subscribe to his core beliefs, but it is a conversation that is important for any man to hear and I would suggest sharing it with your wife. Though you may want to do it on a date night, because she will want to talk this one through when she is done. Enjoy and thank you to Professor Mansfield for sharing his time with Dads Unplugged.
This interview will begin airing at 11am PST on Wednesday, October 27th, 2010.

Michael Kimmel has written 12 books dealing with Men. One was recently referenced in a Newsweek Cover article titled “Man Up.” It really defines where we men have come from and where we are going. This nationally renowned author and professor at Stony Brook University joined Todd and Kent to talk about what men are facing in this day and age. We answer the questions: Why do men have to Man Up and how can they? It’s not as difficult as some men might think.

Cyberbullying, I am sure with the start of school these past two weeks, you have probably already heard about it. Your teachers have told you the signs to look out for. It’s one of those silent killers. You may never see it coming and then it has a brutal impact on your life as a parent. Here is what we have found in our research, PLUS we are talking about it today on Dads Unplugged at 11am. I found this list online and wanted to share it with you.
- Start by talking with your children about their online activities and the dangers of cyberbullying – set their expectations by discussing your views on monitoring their Internet and smartphone use
- Set up Google Alerts to monitor mentions of your children’s names on the web
- Friend your children on Facebook and monitor their privacy settings so you are able to view their profile and activity
- In addition to Facebook, cyberbullies use other social networking sites like Twitter to post hateful messages. Familiarize yourself with these sites and set up an account to enable you to routinely search what others are saying about your kids
- Inform teachers if you suspect your child is being cyberbullied. Teachers are among the first to notice important changes in children’s behavior, and it’s possible the bully may be a classmate
- Consider implementing parental monitoring software on your home computers and children’s smartphones
- Many school districts also now use computer monitoring software on all classroom computers. Check with your school principal, PTA or school board to ensure these tools are in use at your child’s school
- Prohibit your children from having multiple e-mail addresses, screennames and social networking accounts
- Prohibit your children from using geolocation tools and apps on Facebook and smartphones
- Always be observant as your children use electronic communications tools. Changes in habits, such as frequency and timing of use, mood swings and other indicators, could be a sign that your child is being bullied or a target of other online mischief
If you have experience with Cyberbullying or have had it effect your family, please drop a comment below or listen to the show live and IM us. We would love your input.

I guess you missed it and did you miss out. Keep your eye out for the LONG version of the time we spent down at Players because I had to edit out a good 15 minutes of great conversation to fit in our 30 minute window. Things that will be in that longer version, Darci (we still don’t believe she actually has given birth to 5 kids), Kent railing on the University of Washington and how they treated his dad, plus more comments about how one Dad should handle a very troubling athletic situation with his son. We never know what is going to happen at these Dads Unplugged get togethers, but we do know that we will have a great time. Hope you can join us for the next one. Keep your eyes open on the web site, or if you want to be added to our mailing list, send us a note at Comments@pagatim.fm
